Having a leaky toilet can cause a heap of problems. In order to get it fixed, you need to know where the issue stems from. Here, you will learn of the most common causes of a leaky toilet. One reason why your toilet may be leaky is that the bolts or washers are worn. There are two large bolts that hold the tank and toilet together, as well as a three-inch gasket. If these things get worn down, water may begin coming out of your toilet. A Common Problem With Leaky Toilets Corrosion is another common cause of leaky toilets. This issue can occur anywhere in the toilet and pipes. It has a number of causes, from old age to chemical reactions. Since the problem may occur in the plumbing and pipes, this is quite possibly the worst cause of a leaky toilet and the most expensive to take care of! Also, this may not be an issue you can fix yourself, meaning you may have to hire a plumber. Rusty pipes are the result of corrosion and could be the main cause of your leaky toilet. It damages the toilet's metallic parts. Most parts of a toilet tend to be underwater most of the part; when these parts are constantly in water, they may begin to rust. When this happens, you may have to replace said parts. Issues With The Tank You may be experiencing a leaky toilet if the tank is cracked. The water from the tank is what is used to flush your toilet. If it is cracked, water may begin leaking out of it. Similarly, a cracked bowl can have the same effect. If either of these are the cause, you [...]
With so many people considering themselves to be DIY experts nowadays, did you know that there is a chance that you could actually be doing more harm than good if you do not have the requisite skills for the job in hand. Making Problems Worse Maybe you have a little experience and feel though you can nip the problem in the bud, our advice to you will always be - don't. Sure, there may be the odd problem which you can fix but if you end up biting off more than you can chew, you may end up causing more damage which may prove costly to repair. Leaving it to the Professionals The majority of problems should be left to a professional plumber and below are some of the reasons why: Toilets: If a toilet won’t flush at all, or if the water drains slowly, the obvious cause will be a blockage in the pipes. Although attacking the blockage with a plunger may help, it is crucial to find out if there is a bigger problem at hand. Sceptic problems or a blocked sewer line are not uncommon and if this is the case, these repairs are beyond your capability and should be performed by professional plumbers. Drains: Maybe you think pouring liquid drain cleaner down a drain will solve your problem but the chances are this will never get to the root of the problem and it will recur again in the future, possibly even worse than before. Recurring use of drain cleaner can actually negatively impact the functionality of your pipes. When it settles on the bottom of pipes, it has even been known to corrode a hole through them. Definitely not good news! Seriously, home [...]
Burst pipes are at the heart of many plumbing issues and despite the fact that many water pipes are made from copper, a very durable material, they are still prone to springing a leak. How does this happen though? Pipes designed solely for the purpose of allowing water to pass through, should surely be able to withstand almost anything. The truth is though that depending on the type of water running through the pipe, leaks can sometimes begin to appear after even a couple years of use. What Are The Main Causes? Although there can be a variety of different causes, by far the main causes of a burst pipes related to internal corrosion and high water pressure. Internal corrosion of a water pipe results in the gradual destruction of the pipe’s surface by a chemical reaction caused by the acidity of the water passing through it. Water that’s very acidic will cause corrosion, however alkaline water will cause limescale build up. A limescale build up can actually decrease your chances of pinhole leaks – as the limescale acts as a sort of internal coating. What About Water Pressure If the diameter of a water pipe is too small, the pressure is likely to be too much for the pipe, resulting in excess strain. Over a period of time this increased level of strain will likely become too great for the majority of water pipes and as such, cracks will begin to appear. To combat this issue, the simple rule is that the higher the water pressure will be, the wider the pip should be. A Winter Problem Although, obviously highly unlikely during the summer, severely cold can cause pipes to freeze resulting in internal [...]
